An ultramarathon is any race that exceeds 26.2 miles. Shawn Goertz and Andy Emerson are two local Columbia men who decided to start running these ultra-distances. Both run these lengths for different reasons. For one, it’s about clearing his mind and meditation after rocky start in his first ultra-race. For the other, it’s about keeping up with friends. 'Five or 50 Miles'

Shawn Goertz is an ultrarunner in Columbia, Missouri. He typically runs on trails around the city. In this, he speaks about how he prepares for a run, whether it is a short run or a long race. His main focus during a run is his breathing. Goertz says that how he breathes determines how well he is running. While he does compete in races, Goertz says he is usually competing against himself. “I can’t win a race in the first ten miles, but I can lose it,” he said.

Recovery before the running

Shawn Goertz is planning to run a 100K race in February. But after his last race, his hip flexor wasn’t feeling up to training. Additionally, Goertz caught a sinus infection after running that same race. Before Goertz begins his training for his next race, he decided to rest so that his body will be fully prepared for the toll of the training, and eventually the race. During his time off, he has been focusing on just getting healthy again. With this setback, Goertz wonders if he will be prepared for his next running journey.

Looking to get better

Shawn Goertz was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in May 2014. That diagnosis has impacted his running plans. From not feeling well, to feeling mentally blocked, Goertz has been trying to get back to normal for over two years. Just this past month, he has started to feel like him again.
